“The Church’s one foundation is Jesus her Lord.” With that introductory line Samuel J. Stone Takes the worshipper through a theological statement of faith, mission, struggle and triumph. The words were penned before 1900 but are timeless because they echo the truth of God’s Word. His phrasing would seem out of place to many worshippers today. Yet in the song he captures the essence of the Church. Jesus is indeed the One Foundation upon which our life and ministry are to be built.
The Christian life encompasses growth and struggle, struggle and growth. It is the testing and trying of our faith that forces us to mature in Christ. The hope set before us is an eternity in Heaven. The suffering of the present age is a small thing when the eternal has captured the gaze of our soul. We see ourselves as pilgrims and strangers on this earth. Our life isn’t about us but about our Savior. His calling is the highest calling in life.
We cannot let the uncertainty of this world disrupt our faith. Our foundation is sure and therefore the building is secure. Jesus Christ is unfailing in His promise. He has left us here to spread the Gospel to all people. A day is coming when we will be called out. Samuel Stone penned the anticipation of the church in the last verse of his song. “Till with the vision glorious, Her longing eyes are blest, And the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.” There remains a rest for the people of God. But that rest isn’t here. We will have rest from our enemies and labor when we are at home in Heaven. Till that day comes let us be found faithful in His Calling.
